Elena Yeo 


The truth is, I am not a particularly good cook! I lack the patience to make elaborate dishes and stick to a few simple recipes that I make regularly. You won’t find bags of prawn heads in my freezer!

However, I passionately believe that kids should know how to cook—especially Asian food, which is so rich and varied. It’s vital that we celebrate our culinary heritage and ensure that a love and appreciation for food is passed down to future generations.

When I’m not cooking, playing with my cat or sewing clothes, I work as a Creative Producer specialising in theatre, audio-based works, and live arts events.

I enjoy cooking and being able to feed others. Growing up, cooking was a fun activity with my mum. She would indulge my requests to make dishes I’d read about in my favourite story books. I was also regularly enlisted as her kitchen helper on the many occasions she would cook for friends and our large extended family. 
Cooking is not just a life skill— it is a form of communication, a means to share personal and family history and traditions. I share Elena’s wish to ensure that we celebrate and pass on our culinary heritage.

Sweet Potato with Ginger &#38;amp; Pandan

	

Total Time 45 minutesPrep Time 15 minutesCook Time 30 minutes



You’ll Need

︎ 600g sweet potato, peeled and cut into 2-3cm chunks





︎ 

Thumb-sized piece of ginger, washed and smashed





︎ 

4 pandan leaves, washed and tied into a knot








︎ 

3 Tbsp gula Melaka (or to taste)








︎ 

1 ½ litres water

Let’s Cook!

1. Place all the ingredients into a saucepan with enough water to cover the sweet potato.

2. Boil on high heat for 7-10 minutes. Lower the heat and simmer until the sweet potato is
tender, around 20 minutes.

3. Taste – add more gula Melaka if you would like it sweeter.

	5-Spice Chicken Wings

	

Total Time 2 hours

Prep Time 1.5 hours*

Cook Time 30 minutes
*(includes marinading time)






You’ll Need



︎ 

1kg chicken wings (around 12-14 wings)

Marinade:





︎ 

1 inch knob young ginger, peeled and grated



︎ 

3 Tbsp rice flour


︎ 

6 Tbsp light soy sauce



︎ 

2 Tbsp, thick dark soy sauce



︎ 

1 Tbsp gula Melaka



︎ 

3 tbsp cooking oil

Let’s Cook!

1. Heat oven to 200 degrees Celsius at least 15 minutes before cooking.
2. Prepare the chicken wings: Rinse and pat dry with paper towels. Make sure you don’t leave behind any bits of paper.
3. Dredge the chicken wings: Put the wings into a Ziplock bag with the rice flour. Close the
bag and shake vigorously to coat the chicken wings. Set aside.&#38;nbsp;

4. Make the marinade: Combine the marinade ingredients in a small bowl.

Pour the marinade into the bag of chicken wings. Close the bag and shake vigorously.
Massage the chicken through the bag to ensure each wing is well coated. Lay the bag flat in
the refrigerator for 1 hour, flipping over once.
5. Prepare roasting pan: Line the baking tray with aluminium foil. Evenly coat with one
tablespoon of cooking oil.
6. Place the chicken wings in a single layer on the roasting pan. Brush any leftover marinade
on the wings. Apply a thin layer of cooking oil on the wings. Put into the oven and roast.
After 20 minutes, remove the baking tray and turn the chicken wings over using tongs.Return to oven and cook for another 10-15 minutes, until done.
Note: Undercooked chicken can be unsafe to eat. Big Hands should check before Little Fingers dig in.
